  • Jazz it Up in Derry! City of Derry Jazz Festival Returns this Week

The famous walls of Derry will resound with music when the City of Derry Jazz & Big Band Festival returns from the 1st-5th of May 2025! Taking place from 1 to 5 May 2025, this year’s programme includes old jazz favourites, local legends and plenty of new talent, ready to deliver five days packed with entertainment, from jazz workshops to live concerts and drama performances. What's On The must-attend event for jazz lovers will feature headliners Billy Ocean, and Una Healy in session with Luke Thomas. Soul sensation Billy Ocean will perform his biggest hits in the Millennium Forum (3 and 4 May) while Una Healy (former Saturdays singer) teams up with Luke Thomas & the Swing Cats to present a celebration of the Great American Song Book (2 May) in St Columb’s Hall.  The City of Derry Jazz & Big Band Festival will stage over 450 gigs in some 70 venues across the city featuring local and international talent. Festival favourites including jazz hubs, jazz alfresco, funky brass bands, workshops and dance classes will be back in a programme that will see the historic city in full swing over five music-filled days.   Alongside the ticketed events, there will be lots of free outdoor performances that will invite people to dance in the streets and encourage musicians young and old to strike up a tune.  Visitors to Derry are always assured of a warm welcome and there are top-class accommodation options and a range of great eateries to make a trip to the city for the festival weekend even more memorable. Accommodation Options    Four-star boutique hotel Shipquay provides luxury accommodation in a heritage building that overlooks the 400-year-old walls. The period townhouse has a stylish, contemporary décor that complements the building’s history.  More luxury accommodation can be found at Bishop’s Gate Hotel where rooms, suites and apartments are designed to reflect the Edwardian heritage of the building. Situated within the walls, the hotel is perfectly placed to put guests at the heart of the festival events.   Festival goers that really want to get into the zone should check into the Jazz House , an opulently decorated Edwardian townhouse with five guest rooms that celebrate legends of jazz.   Dining Options Keeping fuelled during the hectic festival programme is easy in Derry with options ranging from top-class street food to fine dining.    Pyke ‘N’ Pommes on the riverfront is a popular spot for hearty street food in quirky surroundings or for a wider variety head to Clipper Quay Street Food Market. For a sit-in treat, Artis by Phelim O'Hagan is a great choice. The Michelin recommended restaurant uses top quality produce from local suppliers to produce imaginative menus. Another Michelin recommended gem is Browns Bond Hill, one of the city’s top restaurants and winner of multiple awards.  Exploring Derry Derry is one of the finest examples of a walled city in Europe and a tour of its 400-year-old walls is a must on a visit. Guided or unguided, a stroll around the 1.5km walkway on top of the walls will connect visitors to a part of the city’s rich history and add another dimension to a great festival weekend break.

Cormac’s focus on food provenance and seasonal ingredients lies at the heart of everything he does and is the cornerstone of his cooking;  “Great dishes start with great flavours, it’s my job to make the ingredients sing, it’s not my job to over complicate great produce. I don’t subscribe into the idea that there must be all of these extra flourishes such as gels and foams to make a dish impressive, great food doesn’t need that.  I like to start from the beginning, and to look and see what’s in season. What’s growing now is going to be the very, very best thing on your plate.  It’s incredible how something as simple as a spring cabbage or a carrot can become something extraordinary with careful and thoughtful cooking. Ingredients don’t need to be pimped up and made into something they aren’t they just need to be complemented and matched carefully and thoughtfully” For a more casual experience, The Cellar Bar serves light bites from 1pm to 5pm and a hearty evening menu from 5pm to 9pm. Whether you’re stopping by for a midday snack or enjoying a full dinner, the welcoming atmosphere makes it the perfect place to unwind.   If you're looking for a romantic getaway, a relaxing retreat, or marking a special occasion,  a stay at Cahernane House Hotel promises an unparalleled luxury experience - all in gorgeous Kerry! • Practical Tips for Travelling in Ireland with Your Pet

For a lot of us, leaving a beloved pet at home is like leaving a family member out of a trip. Travelling with a pet requires a touch of preparation, especially when you’re navigating different laws, customs, and climates. The good news? We’ve compiled all the must-know information so you can travel with your best friend. Coming from Abroad? Start with Pet Travel Rules Ireland has strict but manageable rules when it comes to importing pets. Dogs entering Ireland from abroad must: Be microchipped, Have an up-to-date rabies vaccination  (administered at least 21 days before travel), Possess an EU Pet Passport  (for EU travelers) or a valid Animal Health Certificate (AHC)  for dogs from Great Britain, And be treated for tapeworm (Echinococcus multilocularis) within 1–5 days of entry if coming from certain countries, including the UK. For ferry and airline travel, check with carriers ahead of time — Aer Lingus, for example, doesn’t allow pets in the cabin, but some ferries (like Irish Ferries and Stena Line) offer dedicated pet cabins or onboard kennels. By Road - Car Travel and Pet Safety Once in Ireland, the car is your best bet for exploring freely with your dog. But there are a few things to note: Dogs must be safely restrained  — either in a crate, behind a dog guard, or wearing a canine seatbelt harness. Never leave your dog alone in a parked car, even on overcast days — Irish weather is unpredictable, and overheating happens fast. Stop regularly for water, short walks, and the odd sniff-and-explore session. Good rest areas include large service stations, Loughcrew Megalithic Centre (Meath), the Glen of Aherlow (Tipperary), or Portlaoise Plaza, which has a designated pet area. Where Dogs Can and Can’t Go Ireland is increasingly dog-friendly, but it pays to be aware of restrictions: National Parks  like Glenveagh, Killarney, and Connemara welcome dogs on leads — but only on designated trails. Beaches  often allow dogs year-round, but check local signage — some implement seasonal restrictions (typically May to September). Farms and rural trails  require extra care: always keep dogs on leads near livestock, and never let them enter fields with animals uninvited. A good rule of thumb: if unsure, ask. Many pubs, cafés, and even shops are happy to accommodate well-behaved dogs, especially outside of peak dining hours or in outdoor areas. Health & Safety - Vets, Ticks, and Emergencies Ireland’s  beauty comes with a few risks for dogs — namely ticks , particularly in wooded or grassy areas. Carry a tick remover and check your dog daily, especially after hikes. Make a note of nearby 24-hour veterinary clinics , especially if you're venturing far from cities. Major towns usually have emergency vets, and many clinics are happy to provide advice over the phone. Bring a basic canine first-aid kit : tweezers, antiseptic wipes, a tick hook, gauze, and any medications your dog needs. Packing List for Your Dog Spending a weekend in Donegal or a week touring the Wild Atlantic Way? Pack accordingly! Lead and harness (plus a long-line for beaches), Poop bags — and plenty of them, Travel bowls and bottled water, Dog food (some specialty brands are harder to find in Irish shops), A towel for muddy paws (a must), Your pet’s documents, just in case. Bonus: many Irish shops sell charming, locally-made dog gear — a tweed collar from Kerry makes a great souvenir for your pup. Respect and Responsibility Ireland is warm and welcoming to dogs — but responsible pet ownership is expected. Clean up after your dog, keep them on a lead unless otherwise indicated, and be mindful of noise or over-excitement in shared spaces. If your dog is nervous around crowds or other animals, avoid busy markets or outdoor festivals where tight spaces can be overwhelming. With a little planning, you and your companion can make memories across the island that are muddy, magical, and unforgettable!

  • Meet Sausage Dog Social Dublin's Cutest (and Longest) Dog Club in Town

If you’ve ever dreamed of being surrounded by a sea of tiny legs, wiggly tails, and long-bodied cuteness, then Dublin’s Sausage Dog Social is the place to be. This monthly meet-up brings together Dachshunds and their humans for a wholesome gathering filled with zoomies, socialising, and an occasional fashion show (yes, some of these pups rock tiny sweaters). Dublin is home to many quirky and wonderful things, but one of its cutest hidden gems has to be the Sausage Dog Social —a monthly meet-up for Dachshunds and their humans. Organised by a group of dedicated Dachshund lovers, the event is open to all who want to join—whether you own a sausage dog yourself or just want to admire them at paw-length distance. The best part? It’s completely free. What to Expect at a Sausage Dog Social If you’re picturing a group of dogs running wild in a park, you’re not far off—but there’s a certain charm that makes this event stand out. Dozens of Dachshunds of all shapes, sizes, and personalities come together – and a few show up wearing ridiculously adorable outfits —from tiny knitted jumpers to full-blown stylish fits. Dressed up or not, these little dogs have a way of stealing the show with their big personalities. While the pups are busy making friends (or, in true Dachshund fashion, ignoring each other completely), their owners get the chance to chat, swap tips, and share the joys and challenges of raising one of the world’s most stubborn, lovable breeds. When and Where? The next Sausage Dog Social happen on a monthly basis, with the next one due to happen at the end of April , though the exact date and location are still to be confirmed. Past meet-ups have taken place in various parks around Dublin , so expect an announcement soon on where the next one will be. To stay updated, the best way is to follow Sausage Dog Social Dublin on Facebook or check in with Bobby ‘Diva’ Dassler , a well-known Dublin Dachshund with his own Instagram page . Bobby and his humans are part of the organizing crew and always keep followers in the loop. Why You Should Go If you have a Dachshund, it’s a great chance to let them socialise, burn off some energy, and meet other local sausage dogs. Plus, you’ll meet fellow owners who truly understand what it’s like to live with a dog that thinks it’s 10 times its actual size. Keep an eye on social media for the final details – this is one Dublin event you won’t want to miss. check out Sausage Dog Social Dublin on Facebook and follow Bobby ‘Diva’ Dassler on Instagram —he’s one of the regulars and quite the local celebrity.

  • Hikes in Ireland Your Dog Will Love (and You Too)

Ireland is full of amazing trails, forest paths, coastal walks and muddy puddles (sorry, clean car) — and the best bit? So many of them are totally dog-friendly. We’ve rounded up some of Ireland’s best hikes where both two-legged and four-legged walkers are welcome! Ticknock Forest, Co. Dublin Good for: City dogs craving the woods Ticknock is basically Dublin’s back garden — a mix of forest trails and mountain views, just 30 minutes from the city centre. It’s a top spot for a leg stretch and a head-clearing wander, and your dog will love all the earthy smells. Keep them on a lead and treat yourself to the Fairy Castle Loop for some seriously stunning views. Bonus: there’s usually a coffee truck nearby. You earned it. Bray to Greystones Cliff Walk, Co. Wicklow Good for: Sea breezes and cliffside photo ops This one’s a classic. A cliff-hugging coastal path with epic views, the Bray to Greystones walk is a beaut — just keep your dog on a lead (it’s a long way down). You can stop for ice cream in either town, or take the DART back if someone (you, not the dog) isn’t feeling the full 7 km stretch. Currently, the full Bray-Greystones Cliff Walk is temporarily closed due to multiple landslides, which have made sections of the trail unstable. Works to make the trail passable again are underway, and there are hiking diversions in place so that you can still get the full 7km walk out of this adventure! Check out this proposed alternative on bray.ie's website. Gleninchaquin Park, Co. Kerry Good for: Dogs with a taste for waterfalls If you want a trail that feels like a fantasy, this is it! Misty mountains, waterfalls, wooden bridges, and sheep with attitude are all included on this walk. It’s on private land, so there’s a small entry fee — but dogs are welcome (on leads), and the trails range from quick strolls to proper rambles.  Divis and the Black Mountain, Co. Antrim Good for: Belfast pups with altitude This one’s a bit of a hidden gem — huge skies, wide trails, and views over Belfast, Lough Neagh, and even Scotland if you’re lucky. Dogs are welcome, just stay on-lead near livestock. Pro tip: bring layers. This place loves a good wind. Castlewellan Forest Park, Co. Down Good for: Woodland wanderers and social sniffers Castlewellan is doggie heaven. Not only are there miles of forest trails and a big lake, but there’s a proper off-lead dog zone where your pup can make a few new pals. Pack a picnic, stay for the views, and don’t be surprised if your dog wants to come back every weekend. The Curragh Plains, Co. Kildare Good for: Off-lead zoomies and open skies Massive. Flat. Glorious. The Curragh is like a dog’s dream — acres of open grassland where they can stretch their legs (with decent recall, of course). There are sheep around, so always keep an eye, but this place is perfect for a stress-free stroll, especially if your dog needs to run their socks off. Portumna Forest Park, Co. Galway Good for: Woodland chill and lakeside dips This place is lovely. Big shady trees, peaceful lakeside trails, and the chance of spotting a deer or two (or three). Dogs need to be on a lead, but there’s loads to explore, and a sneaky swim in Lough Derg if your dog’s the adventurous type (aka, the type that dives headfirst into any body of water without asking). Before You Go - A Few Tips for a Pawsome Day Out Pack water (for you and the dog — no judging if it’s in matching bottles) Leads on where signs say so — lots of these trails have livestock Poop bags — bring extras. Always. Towel for the car — because your dog will  find the muddiest part of the walk Snacks — hiking is hard work, even if you’re mostly there for the vibes Got a favourite dog-friendly trail we missed? Let us know — we’re always sniffing out the next great walk.
